Wyoming ATV License Plate Requirements: 2026 Guide
Share
A qualifying ATV registered as a Wyoming Multipurpose Vehicle (MPV) receives a rear license plate for road use. MPV registration and an off-road riding permit serve different purposes.

Which ATVs qualify as Multipurpose Vehicles?
WYDOT's MPV guidance describes vehicles with at least four wheels, an empty weight of at least 300 pounds but less than 3,000 pounds, a permanent upright seat or saddle at least 24 inches above the ground, and an identifying number.
Confirm your machine's classification with the county office. An ATV's engine size or appearance alone does not establish MPV eligibility.
Obtaining and displaying the plate
WYDOT's MPV information and FAQ explains that, after titling through the County Clerk, registration is handled by the County Treasurer. An approved application, applicable fees, and proof of insurance are required. One MPV plate is issued and must be securely fastened and plainly visible at the rear.
Where can a registered MPV operate?
WYDOT prohibits MPVs on interstate highways. Its guidance also requires vehicles unable to reach the road's maximum allowed speed to operate at the extreme right edge and display the specified reflectorized flag or slow-moving vehicle emblem.
Road registration does not establish access to every trail or public-land route. Verify land-manager rules, closures, and any required ORV permit separately.
Choosing a secure ATV plate mount
Match the bracket to the ATV model and year, then compare the actual plate dimensions and mounting-hole spacing with the product specifications. A state registration category does not establish mechanical fitment.
Elite Engineering offers ATV license plate brackets and mounts for selected Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki models. Many use the common 4-by-7-inch plate format. Check your specific plate and vehicle before ordering; compatibility with every plate described in this guide has not been verified.
- Keep identification numbers, stickers, and any required plate lighting unobstructed.
- Check tire, suspension, exhaust, hitch, and cargo clearance.
- Install the specified hardware using the bracket instructions.
- Recheck fasteners after the first ride and clean mud from the plate.
Planning the mounting location
Look at the plate from behind with your normal riding equipment loaded. A bag or hitch accessory can cover a plate that was visible with an empty ATV. Check the setup before drilling or tightening hardware, and leave clearance for suspension movement.
Use the bracket's installation instructions and measure the plate you actually receive. Do not substitute a decorative sign for the registration plate or cover the identification with oversized washers.
Wyoming ATV plate questions
Does every off-road ATV need an MPV plate?
No. This guide addresses the road-registration route for qualifying MPVs.
Does an ORV permit replace an MPV plate?
Do not treat a riding-area permit as highway registration. Verify what your planned route requires.
Who should I contact?
Start with the County Clerk for titling and the County Treasurer for registration, and ask the riding-area manager about route access.
