Texas ATV License Plate Requirements: 2026 Guide

Texas requires an Off-Highway Vehicle license plate for ATV operation on roads authorized by a city or qualifying county. This is a restricted-use plate, not permission to drive an ATV on any Texas road.

Requirements reviewed September 30, 2026. Check the linked state agencies and local riding rules before your trip.

When does a Texas ATV need a plate?

TxDMV's Unique Vehicles guidance explains that ATVs, ROVs, UTVs, and sand rails are titled but are not eligible for ordinary vehicle registration. An OHV plate is available through the county tax assessor-collector.

For locally authorized road operation, the vehicle must display an OHV plate, and authorization is limited to roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less. At operating speeds of 25 mph or less, a slow-moving vehicle emblem is also required.

TxDMV describes additional limited situations and exemptions, including qualifying agricultural and utility work. Read those conditions directly before relying on an exemption.

OHV plate versus trail decal

The road-use plate differs from the Texas Parks and Wildlife OHV decal. TxDMV lists that decal among the requirements for public OHV land. A plate alone does not establish that all trail requirements are satisfied.

Check local road permission first

Before buying a mount for road use, contact the city or county responsible for your planned route. Ask which roads are authorized and which local rules apply. Getting a plate does not compel a community to allow ATV operation.

Keep a record of the route information you receive and check posted restrictions at the destination. Plan transport to the riding area when road access is unavailable.

Choosing an ATV license plate bracket

Measure your actual plate and the distance between its mounting holes before ordering a mount. Then check the bracket's ATV model, model year, mounting location, and hardware requirements. A plate's outside dimensions alone do not establish compatibility.

Elite Engineering's ATV license plate brackets and mounts include options for selected Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki machines. Many are designed for the 4-by-7-inch plate format. Confirm your plate's hole spacing and the product's listed vehicle fitment before purchasing; this guide does not certify a particular bracket for every state-issued plate.

Installation checks

  • Keep the registration characters and stickers uncovered by fasteners or the bracket.
  • Check clearance around the tires, suspension, exhaust, hitch, and cargo rack.
  • Use the product's installation instructions and specified hardware.
  • Inspect the attachment after the first ride and periodically afterward.
  • Clean accumulated mud so the plate remains readable.

Practical mounting considerations

Keep the OHV plate separate from decorative signs. Before installation, compare the hole locations on your plate with the bracket dimensions, and check whether cargo or a towing attachment will interfere with visibility.

If your ATV is used for work and recreation, inspect the setup after changing racks, bags, or other accessories. A plate should not be left hanging by a single loose fastener or positioned where routine loading will bend it.

Texas ATV plate questions

Does Texas register ATVs like cars?

TxDMV distinguishes the OHV plate from ordinary vehicle registration.

Can I ride every 35-mph road with a plate?

No. A speed limit alone does not establish that the road is authorized for your ATV.

Where do I obtain the plate?

Start with your county tax assessor-collector and the current TxDMV instructions.
