North Dakota ATV License Plate Requirements: Plate or Decal?

Reviewed September 30, 2026.

North Dakota lets registered ATV owners display a decal or request a physical plate. State law directs the DOT to issue a reflective registration decal, or a distinctive number plate at the owner’s request. A physical plate is therefore an option under this program.

Registration and display

Chapter 39-29 generally requires OHV registration, with exemptions including exclusive private-land use and organized track racing. The registration fee is $5 for two years, plus a $15 OHV trail tax. Secure the issued decal or plate where its identification is clearly legible.

Road use and visiting riders

Registered OHVs may use gravel, dirt and loose-surface roads. The chapter permits certain paved-road use with speed and vehicle-class restrictions; controlled-access highway rights of way are generally prohibited. Local rules can restrict operation. A visiting rider’s home-state registration exemption does not automatically eliminate the public trails and lands access permit requirement.

Should you choose a plate?

Consider how you use the machine and where a number can remain visible. A physical plate needs a secure mounting location with clearance from moving parts. A decal needs a suitable surface and correct placement. Ask DOT about the available identification before deciding on a mount.

Measure the actual plate, hole spacing and available rear clearance. Check suspension travel and luggage placement. After installation, inspect the mount following the first ride and periodically afterward.

Explore Elite Engineering’s ATV brackets by model. Confirm plate dimensions and your exact vehicle fitment before ordering.

Does a plate grant unrestricted road access?

No. Registration identification and permission to operate on a particular road are separate questions. Plan a legal route and verify current local restrictions before your trip.
