Minnesota ATV License Plate Requirements: 2026 Guide

Minnesota requires registered ATVs to display identification on a rear plate at least 4 inches high and 7½ inches wide. A plate measuring only 4 by 7 inches is too narrow under the rule.

Minnesota ATV plate dimensions and placement

Minnesota Rule 6102.0010 requires the plate to be clearly visible at the rear, at least 12 inches above the ground. Registration numbers and the decal must remain clear and legible. Public-use registration displays the decal in the upper-left section.

Registration characters must be at least 1½ inches high with a 3/16-inch stroke, read left to right, and contrast with the background.

Private-use registration is different

The rule places a private-use decal in the upper-right section of the plate. If the ATV is registered only for private use, registration numbers do not need to be displayed. The registration category also affects where the vehicle can be used; a private-use decal should not be treated as permission for general public-trail riding.

Obtaining registration and trail access

Use the Minnesota DNR registration guidance for the current application and renewal process. Visitor requirements and trail passes should be checked through the nonresident OHV trail-pass page. Registration does not settle every age, safety-training, or route-access requirement.

Will a 4-by-7-inch bracket fit?

The bracket size and the required plate size are separate measurements. Elite Engineering's ATV plate mounts commonly use a 4-by-7-inch plate format. Compatibility with a larger Minnesota plate has not been verified for every product. Do not assume it fits simply because the plate can overlap the bracket.

Before ordering, send your ATV model and year, actual plate dimensions, and horizontal and vertical mounting-hole spacing to Elite Engineering. Plate support, fastener positions, and vehicle clearance need to be checked together. Keep the full compliant plate intact rather than trimming it to fit a smaller mount.

Installation checklist

  • Measure the plate's full height and width.
  • Check its rear location and height above the ground.
  • Leave the numbers and appropriate decal corner uncovered.
  • Inspect clearance around the exhaust, tires, suspension, and cargo.
  • Clean the plate and check the fasteners regularly.

Minnesota ATV plate questions

Can I use a plate only 7 inches wide?

No. It falls short of the rule's minimum width.

Does private registration eliminate the plate?

The rule still specifies a plate for the private-use decal, while changing the number-display requirement.

Does the plate make the ATV street legal?

Registration identification does not provide unrestricted road permission. Check the laws for your vehicle and intended route.
