Michigan ATV License Plate Requirements: 2026 Guide

Michigan requires a license plate for an ATV converted, titled, and registered for on-road use. Ordinary off-road riding uses the DNR's ORV license and trail-permit system instead. These are different processes.

When does a Michigan ATV need a plate?

The Michigan Secretary of State explains that converted ATVs titled as assembled vehicles need a state-issued plate, valid registration tab, and Michigan No-Fault insurance. Registration and the plate must be renewed annually.

Can you convert an ATV for road use?

Michigan provides a conversion process, including assembled-vehicle titling and an on-road equipment inspection. Adding a bracket or lights alone does not complete that process. Follow the Secretary of State's current assembled-vehicle instructions and confirm that your particular machine is eligible.

To register the assembled ATV, the agency lists identification, the assembled-vehicle title, and payment of the applicable fees. Arrange insurance before completing registration.

Off-road riding uses a different system

The Michigan DNR's ORV permit guidance explains the ORV license and trail permit requirements. The trail permit applies to designated trails, routes, and scramble areas. Review the DNR chart for your vehicle and riding location.

Some roads may allow ORVs under separate access rules. Do not assume those rules make an unconverted ATV eligible for unrestricted road travel, or that a road plate replaces every DNR permit.

Choosing a secure ATV plate mount

Match the bracket to the ATV model and year, then compare the actual plate dimensions and mounting-hole spacing with the product specifications. A state registration category does not establish mechanical fitment.

Elite Engineering offers ATV license plate brackets and mounts for selected Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki models. Many use the common 4-by-7-inch plate format. Check your specific plate and vehicle before ordering; compatibility with every plate described in this guide has not been verified.

  • Keep identification numbers, stickers, and any required plate lighting unobstructed.
  • Check tire, suspension, exhaust, hitch, and cargo clearance.
  • Install the specified hardware using the bracket instructions.
  • Recheck fasteners after the first ride and clean mud from the plate.

Michigan ATV plate questions

Does every trail ATV need a metal plate?

No. The on-road assembled-vehicle process is separate from the off-road license and permit system.

Will a plate let me ride anywhere?

No. Check the road jurisdiction, trail designation, and local restrictions for your route.

What should I do before buying a bracket?

Confirm your registration route, obtain the relevant plate dimensions, and check your ATV's listed product fitment. Keeping those steps in order avoids purchasing a mount for a registration category your machine cannot use.
