How to Keep an ATV License Plate From Falling Off

This movement places repeated stress around the plate’s mounting holes. Eventually, the holes can enlarge, the plastic can crack or the hardware can pull through the panel.

Use a Bracket That Supports the Plate

A license plate should not be supported only around two small mounting holes while the rest of the plate shakes freely.

A properly sized bracket supports more of the plate and helps distribute vibration across a larger area. This reduces stress around the holes and helps prevent the plate from bending or cracking.

Choose the Right Mounting Location

The mounting location can be just as important as the bracket itself.

Look for a location that:

• Attaches to a strong part of the ATV

• Keeps the plate visible

• Protects it from direct trail impacts

• Provides clearance from the tires and suspension

• Stays away from excessive exhaust heat

• Does not interfere with racks or cargo

• Keeps the plate close to the machine

A plate that hangs far behind or beside the ATV creates more leverage on the mounting hardware. Keeping the plate tucked close to the machine generally provides a cleaner and more protected installation.

Use Locking Hardware

• Large washers that distribute the load

Do not overtighten hardware against a thin license plate. Excessive clamping force can distort the plate or begin cracking the material around its mounting holes.

Tighten the hardware securely, then inspect it after your first few rides.

Check for Contact and Interference

Before riding, move the suspension through as much of its travel as practical and look for anything that could contact the plate.

Check clearance around:

• Rear tires

• Axles and suspension components

• Exhaust outlets

• Trailer hitches

• Cargo racks

• Storage boxes

• Mud flaps

• Tow straps and other accessories

A bracket can appear perfectly positioned while the ATV is parked but contact a tire or suspension component when the suspension compresses.

Inspect the Plate Regularly

Include the license plate in your normal pre-ride inspection.

Look for:

• Loose bolts

• Enlarged mounting holes

• Small cracks around the holes

• A bent or twisted bracket

• Evidence of tire contact

• Heat damage near the exhaust

• Excessive movement when the plate is pushed by hand

Catching a loose fastener or small crack early is much easier than replacing a missing registration plate later.
