Georgia UTV License Plate Requirements: MPOHV Registration Guide

Reviewed September 30, 2026.

Georgia offers plates for qualifying multipurpose off-highway vehicles (MPOHVs). The program allows voluntary registration for county-road operation. Ordinary handlebar-steered, straddle-seat four-wheelers do not qualify under this category.

Which UTVs qualify?

The Department of Revenue lists utility-purpose design, manufacture after January 1, 2000, at least four wheels, nonstraddle seating and a steering wheel. Other criteria include at least 350 pounds of payload capacity, ability to operate between 25 and 65 mph, width no greater than 80 inches and gross vehicle weight below 4,000 pounds. Required safety equipment includes lights, a mirror and belts.

How do you get the plate?

Apply through your county tag office with identification, ownership documentation, the MV-OHV inspection and ownership affidavit, liability insurance and the $20 annual registration fee. A physical inspection may be required. The department issues registration and a plate, rather than a Georgia MPOHV title. Registration renewal and continued insurance are required.

Plan the route before the installation

The department describes county-road use. Do not interpret registration as permission for every highway. Ask the tag office and relevant local authority about the roads you intend to travel.

Choosing a mount

Wait until you know the plate type and dimensions. Measure mounting holes, available clearance and the space needed for a visible installation. Check whether a spare tire, cargo box or hitch will block the plate.

Elite Engineering’s brackets are designed for specific ATV models. See the current bracket selection, but confirm vehicle and plate compatibility before buying for a UTV.

Common question: Does my four-wheeler qualify?

The published MPOHV criteria exclude ordinary handlebar-steered quads. Adding lights or a plate holder does not resolve that vehicle-classification issue.
