Did Polaris Replace the Sportsman 450 With the Sportsman 500? 2026 vs. 2027 Explained
Share
If you've been looking at the 2027 Polaris ATV lineup, you may have noticed something interesting: the familiar Sportsman 450 H.O. has been replaced in the new-model lineup by a Sportsman 500.
So, did Polaris simply rename the Sportsman 450 to the Sportsman 500?
Essentially, yes—but there's a little more to it than a new decal.
Polaris hasn't officially described the 2027 Sportsman 500 as a renamed Sportsman 450 H.O., but when you compare the specifications, pricing, dimensions, and position in the Sportsman lineup, the relationship is pretty clear.
The Sportsman 450 Was Already a 499cc ATV
One reason the change makes sense is that the Sportsman 450 H.O. wasn't actually powered by a 450cc engine.
The 2026 Polaris Sportsman 450 H.O. uses a 499cc ProStar single-cylinder engine producing 33 horsepower.
For 2027, the new Sportsman 500 uses a 499cc ProStar single-cylinder engine producing the same 33 horsepower.
So despite the change from "450" to "500" on the bodywork, engine displacement hasn't suddenly jumped by 50cc.
The new name simply matches the actual engine size much more closely.
2026 Sportsman 450 vs. 2027 Sportsman 500
When you put the two machines side by side, many of the core specifications are identical.
| Specification | 2026 Sportsman 450 H.O. | 2027 Sportsman 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 499cc ProStar single-cylinder | 499cc ProStar single-cylinder |
| Horsepower | 33 HP | 33 HP |
| Width | 48 in. | 48 in. |
| Ground Clearance | 11.5 in. | 11.5 in. |
| Front Suspension Travel | 8.2 in. | 8.2 in. |
| Rear Suspension Travel | 9.5 in. | 9.5 in. |
| Towing Capacity | 1,350 lb. | 1,350 lb. |
| Front Rack Capacity | 90 lb. | 90 lb. |
| Rear Rack Capacity | 180 lb. | 180 lb. |
| Fuel Capacity | 4.5 gal. | 4.5 gal. |
| Wheelbase | 50.5 in. | 50.5 in. |
| Starting MSRP | $6,999 | $6,999 |
That's a lot of identical numbers.
The overall vehicle dimensions are even the same at approximately 83 inches long, 48 inches wide, and 47 inches tall.
That makes the 2027 Sportsman 500 look much less like an entirely new size of ATV and much more like the next evolution of the 450 platform.
So What Actually Changed for 2027?
Polaris didn't simply swap the number on the fender.
The 2027 Sportsman 500 receives several meaningful upgrades compared with the previous Sportsman 450 H.O.
Bigger Tires and Aluminum Wheels
The 2026 Sportsman 450 H.O. comes with 25-inch tires mounted on 12-inch steel wheels.
The new Sportsman 500 steps up to 26-inch tires on 14-inch aluminum wheels.
That's a noticeable equipment upgrade for an ATV that still starts at the same $6,999 MSRP.
LED Headlights
The Sportsman 450 H.O. used halogen lighting.
The new Sportsman 500 receives LED headlights, providing a more modern lighting setup and improved visibility in low-light conditions.
Standard 2,500-Lb Winch
The Sportsman 450 platform was winch-ready, but a winch wasn't standard equipment on the base machine.
The 2027 Sportsman 500 includes a 2,500-lb winch from the factory.
That's a significant value addition because a winch is one of the first accessories many Sportsman owners install.
New AWD System
Polaris also advertises the 2027 Sportsman 500 with a new all-wheel-drive system with auto-locking front drive.
The system automatically engages the front drive when tire slip is detected, providing additional traction without requiring additional input from the rider.
Did Polaris Discontinue the Sportsman 450?
For the 2027 model lineup, the Sportsman 500 occupies the entry-level position previously held by the Sportsman 450 H.O.
Polaris still lists remaining 2026 Sportsman 450 H.O. models, so you'll likely continue seeing new 450s at dealers while 2026 inventory remains available.
But if you're comparing the current 2027 lineup, the Sportsman 500 is effectively the successor to the Sportsman 450 H.O.
And considering the old "450" already had a 499cc engine, the Sportsman 500 name arguably makes more sense.
Is the 2027 Sportsman 500 an Entirely New ATV?
Not in the way the name might initially suggest.
Its engine displacement, horsepower, chassis dimensions, suspension travel, towing capacity, rack capacities, fuel capacity, wheelbase, and starting price closely match the previous Sportsman 450 H.O.
The bigger changes are in the equipment surrounding that platform: larger tires and wheels, LED lighting, a standard winch, and the updated AWD system.
So rather than thinking of the Sportsman 500 as an entirely different machine, it makes more sense to think of it as an updated and better-equipped successor to the Sportsman 450 H.O.

Will Sportsman 450 Accessories Fit the New Sportsman 500?
This is where things get especially interesting for existing Sportsman owners.
Because so many of the underlying dimensions and mounting areas remain similar, some accessories that fit previous Sportsman models may also work on the new 500.
However, accessory compatibility should always be confirmed individually rather than assuming every 450 accessory will transfer.
One accessory we've already confirmed is the Elite Engineering rear license plate mount.
Our Polaris Sportsman License Plate Bracket fits the 2027 Polaris Sportsman 500 and provides a dedicated mounting location for a standard 4x7-inch ATV or OHV plate.
That means owners moving from an older Sportsman platform to the new 500 have a clean mounting option without drilling into their new ATV.
Bottom Line: Sportsman 450 vs. Sportsman 500
So, did Polaris just turn the Sportsman 450 into the Sportsman 500?
For practical purposes, that's a pretty good way to look at it.
The 2026 Sportsman 450 H.O. already had a 499cc, 33-horsepower engine, and the new 2027 Sportsman 500 maintains the same displacement, horsepower, overall dimensions, suspension travel, towing capacity, rack capacity, and starting MSRP.
The difference is that Polaris has given the platform a more logical name while adding several worthwhile upgrades.
For buyers, that's good news.
The new Sportsman 500 keeps much of what made the Sportsman 450 H.O. a popular affordable ATV while adding better wheels and tires, LED lighting, an included winch, and an updated AWD system—all while maintaining a $6,999 starting MSRP.
