Connecticut ATV License Plate Requirements: 2026 Guide
Share
A Connecticut-registered ATV needs its registration plate attached to the rear. Connecticut also requires registration identification on both sides of the front section, so installing a rear plate is only one part of the display requirements.
Requirements reviewed September 30, 2026. Check the linked state agencies and local riding rules before your trip.
Where does a Connecticut ATV plate go?
The Connecticut DMV ATV registration instructions specify rear placement. Choose a mounting location that lets the plate remain visible rather than hiding it behind a rack, bag, hitch accessory, or other equipment.
Front registration numbers are also required
Connecticut General Statutes, Chapter 255, section 14-381 requires the assigned registration number on each side of the ATV's front section, midway between its top and bottom. The characters must be reflective and at least 3 inches high. These front markings supplement the rear plate.
Registering your ATV
The DMV's ATV section lists the Connecticut registration and title application, Form H-13B, as part of the registration process. Ownership, identification, and other documentation depend on your circumstances. Use that section's current checklist and appointment instructions before visiting a DMV office.
Registration exceptions and visitor rules are addressed separately in section 14-380 and the DMV guidance. Do not assume that permission to ride on someone else's land settles the registration question.
Does the plate permit riding on Connecticut roads?
No. Section 14-387 generally prohibits ATV operation on public highways, with a limited crossing provision and specific conditions. Registration also does not create permission to ride on land: the statute requires written permission from the relevant owner or authority. Confirm both access and operating rules before unloading your ATV.
Choosing an ATV license plate bracket
Measure your actual plate and the distance between its mounting holes before ordering a mount. Then check the bracket's ATV model, model year, mounting location, and hardware requirements. A plate's outside dimensions alone do not establish compatibility.
Elite Engineering's ATV license plate brackets and mounts include options for selected Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki machines. Many are designed for the 4-by-7-inch plate format. Confirm your plate's hole spacing and the product's listed vehicle fitment before purchasing; this guide does not certify a particular bracket for every state-issued plate.
Installation checks
- Keep the registration characters and stickers uncovered by fasteners or the bracket.
- Check clearance around the tires, suspension, exhaust, hitch, and cargo rack.
- Use the product's installation instructions and specified hardware.
- Inspect the attachment after the first ride and periodically afterward.
- Clean accumulated mud so the plate remains readable.
Connecticut ATV mounting checklist
Start with the rear plate and confirm the front reflective numbers are installed too. Photograph your completed setup for your own reference, check the fasteners, and make sure accessories do not cover either form of identification. Recheck visibility after adding cargo.
Frequently asked questions
Are front numbers enough?
No. Connecticut's front registration markings and rear plate serve separate display requirements.
Can I use any motorcycle plate bracket?
Only if it fits your ATV and the actual plate's mounting holes while allowing the required display. Verify both before ordering.
Can visitors assume their home registration is accepted?
Check the DMV's nonresident ATV instructions and reciprocity conditions for your home state before riding.
